Et bien que le roman ne fût pas un best-seller immédiat, il connut un écho mondial à travers des adaptations cinématographiques devenues au moins aussi cultes que l'ouvre d'origine. Pour la bande dessinée, l'immense Georges Bess s'attaque aujourd'hui à nous donner sa version du mythe tout en s'attachant à retranscrire au plus près l'âme du roman. Armé du brio graphique qu'on lui connaît, il fait le choix du noir et blanc, dans des planches à la beauté ténébreuse, pour mettre en valeur la puissance de son trait et lui conférer un souffle gothique assez inédit chez lui.
